1. What do I need to do to teach in Arizona?

You are required to take one or more of the following Arizona Educator Proficiency Assessments™ (AEPA™):

  • Professional Knowledge Tests - A professional knowledge test is required of all applicants for a teaching certificate. There are three levels of the Professional Knowledge test: Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary.

  • Subject Knowledge Tests - Candidates must take a test in the specific area in which they are seeking certification if a test is offered in that area. Information about test and/or credit hour requirements for approved areas in which AEPA assessments are not offered can be found on the ADE Certification Unit's Web site at www.ade.az.gov/certification.

  • Constitutions of the United States and Arizona Test - Candidates applying for certification to become a teacher or school administrator are required to pass an examination on the provisions and principles of the Constitutions of the United States and Arizona. Candidates who have successfully completed ADE-approved coursework in this area are exempt from this requirement.

  • Administrator Tests - Candidates who wish to become certified school administrators must take the appropriate test as a condition of receiving certification as a superintendent, principal, or supervisor.

  • Tests for Additional Approved Areas - A person who holds an Arizona elementary or secondary certificate and applies for an additional approved area must take the relevant subject knowledge test, if one is offered.

2. What are the certification requirements for specific teaching positions?

Please see the Arizona Educator Proficiency Assessments (AEPA) website on requirements.

3. What are the certification requirements for specific teaching positions?

The AEPA are conducted in morning and afternoon test sessions; each session is four hours in length. The morning session has a reporting time of 8:00 a.m. and ends at approximately 12:30 p.m. The afternoon session has a reporting time of 1:00 p.m. and ends at approximately 5:30 p.m. Examinees will be assigned to one or both sessions according to the number and type of tests for which they have registered. As certain tests are only offered in certain sessions, session requests cannot be honored.

For further information, please see examination matrix.
